This is with reference to the news report, “Bad drivers must be named, shamed” (Feb.2). I strongly support Prince Sultan bin Salman’s call that careless drivers should be defamed in public. However, such drivers should also be heavily fined. According to a survey, Saudi Arabia ranks sixth as a country with worst drivers.

Russia occupies the top position, and the three main reason is drunk driving. Fortunately, we in Saudi Arabia, are free from this menace because of the country’s tough laws against consumption of liquor. Hence, with the vigilance of the traffic department and effective punishment, the Kingdom can easily curb reckless driving and climb down from the sixth position.

It was only last Friday morning that I came across three accidents involving three to four cars in each case at the King Fahad highway. The accidents happened within a distance of just two kilometers. In one incident, a speeding car turned turtle.

Friday morning is the safest time to drive for any motorist in view of less traffic congestion. However, some youths seek thrill and make use of this time for speeding and driving recklessly in a bid to show off their driving skills.
